The main side effects of Memantine, which are usually mild, are nausea, restlessness, stomach-ache and headache. More studies are being undertaken to see how effective it is and how the drug can best be used. NICE has issued guidance that Memantine should not be routinely prescribed in Britain due to doubts about its cost effectiveness.

Prof., AIIMS, New Delhi In the present study, 40 male albino rabbits 1-1.5 kg b.wt. ; were randomly allocated to one of the following groups consisting of 10 animals each: GP.I: Healthy controls, GP.II: Pathogenic controls, GP .III: Fenugreek-ethanolic extract treated 200 mg kg, b.wt. ; & GP-IV: Gemfibroizl treated 60 mg ml kg ; . Administration of an atherogenic diet for 10 weeks resulted in marked elevation of serum cholesterol 96.8% ; , tissue cholesterol aorta, 97.6% & liver, 50% ; , serum T.Gs. 80% ; , serum LDL + VLDL-c, 98.5% & phospholipids 83% ; in conjunction with a 62.8% decrease in HDL-c levels as compared to healthy control levels. The extract produced significant reduction P 0.01 ; in above lipid levels. The efficacy was comparable to standard drug, gemfibrozil. Taken together, these observations unravel a strong beneficial role of fenugreek seeds in hyperlipidaemia. 271. CLINICAL EFFICACY OF ENTROPHER IN IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME. KUMAR H., TAMANNA S. Irritable bowel syndrome IBS ; the commonest gastrointestinal disease is a periodic or chronic condition occurring with symptoms like flatulence, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. In some patients constipation may also be noted as a complaint in place of diarrhoea. Etiopathology of IBS is not understood well, though derangement in the activity of intestinal plexus and fermentation of food is reported by some authors. For this intractable disease satisfactory long term treatment is not available. Therefore, the authors planned a controlled study on indigenous formulation of plant origin. Entropher tablets containing different indigenous pharmacologically active substances were developed and supplied by Hamdard laboratories for this clinical study. Double blind clinical placebo controlled trial including IBS patients of both sexes showed highly significant useful effects. Side effects recorded during the clinical trial were not statistically significant. Hence, authors conclude that Entropher tablets are clinically effective and safe for the treatment of IBS. Abresham Bombyx mori cocoon ; is one of the major constituent, used in many Unani Polypharmaceutical formulations used in many cardiovascular disorders. Abresham is reported to contain flavonoids which are known for antioxidant activities. Doxorubicin induced cardiomyopathy is the consequence of oxidative stress through the mediation of free radicals. The effect of oral administration of Abresham 3 ml kg ; was studied on cardiomyopathy produced by Doxorubicin 10 mg kg, i.v. ; in rats. 47. How many of our single mixtures--for example atropine combined with prostigmine--may produce interaction effects which, although not grossly apparent, as with succinylcholine and thiopentone mixture, nevertheless may create unknown pharmacological and or chemical alterations in their constituents? In other clinical situations the interaction may be due 3 ; to drugs given by the patient's attending physician or surgeon before anaesthesia. Each physician, including the anaesthetist, may be unaware of the other's treatment. Anaesthetic agents may then introduce factors that make the previously administered agent a hazardous one. The introduction of antidepressant monoamine oxidase inhibitors MAOI ; exemplifies this type of problem, which has recently been reviewed in relation to anaesthesia.6 The known sites and mechanisms of interaction between drugs are schematically summarized in Figure 1 and discussed below.
