They occur more frequently in children and usually develop in the posterior fossa and spinal cord. Supratentorial ependymomas in adults are uncommon. Between 1975 and 1995, 39 patients with supratentorial ependymomas were treated at the Mayo Clinic. 31 of these patients were adults. Their clinical features and treatments were reviewed. Median age was 32 range, 1682 ; . There were 16 male and 15 female patients. Presenting symptoms were seizures 52% ; , headaches 39% ; , focal neurologic symptoms 32% ; , mental status changes 13% ; , nausea and vomiting 13% ; and ataxia 10% ; . The median duration of symptoms was 2 months. The most common signs were weakness 22% ; , sensory loss 13% ; , ataxia 13% ; , memory loss 10% ; and papilledema 10% ; . The median Karnofsky performance status was 80 40100 ; . Locations of the tumors were frontal 23% ; , parietal 19% ; , temporal 10% ; , occipital 3% ; , third ventricular 10% ; , pineal 6% ; , thalamic 3% ; and lateral ventricular 13% ; . 35% of the tumors had calcification and 80% showed some degree of enhancement. None of the patients had spinal metastases at presentation. 38% of patients had gross total resection, 42% had a subtotal resection, and 20% had just a biopsy. Tumors were low grade in 70% and high grade in 30%. 80% underwent radiation therapy median 5580 cGy, range 50008600 cGy ; . 12% of these patients also had spinal irradiation. No patient had radiosurgery. 3 patients received adjuvant chemotherapy. At the time of recurrence 37% of patients underwent re-operation and 58% had chemotherapy. 1 patient had radiation therapy. The median survival was 64 months range, 8 months 208 months ; . Details of additional analysis will be presented.
